Billy Elliot was a boy living with his father, his brother and his grandmother. His brother and father were miners during the miners strike. They were strikers and had a leader role for the other strikers. They hadn’t much money and didn’t live a fancy life. His mother were dead, and they all missed her.
One day when Billy was at his boxing class, a ballet class was held at the same place. He wasn’t so good at boxing so he had to stay after class and practice, but instead he was very interested in the ballet. He thought it looked interesting and the dance reminded him of his mother, who really liked music and dance. The dance teacher allowed him to dance with the other girls and he liked it very much. So he kept dancing, and he was good at it.
But then his father found out what he was doing and he was very angry. Ballet was for girls, not boys! Billy was sad that he wasn’t allowed to dance anymore, but the dance teacher offered him privet lessons and he accepted. He practiced every Monday and the teacher came with another suggestion. There would be an audition for those who wanted to go to a ballet school in London. Billy was not sure if he should go, that ment he would leave everyone behind. But he accepted.
But unfortunately his brother had a confrontation with the police and he got arrested. Billy went to the court instead of the audition. The dance teacher came home to him and talked to his father and brother. They were angry, and Billy was sad and frustrated. He stopped dancing.
On christmas night he tried to teach his friend how to dance, and his father caught him. Billy started to dance and the father realized that he would have a better life somewhere else, where he could dance and didn’t have to work in the mines.
He broke his strike and started to work again, something he wasn’t proud of. But Billys brother stopped him and they tried to gain money in other ways. They did that so the could pay for Billy to go to London and do an audition. They succeeded in collecting the money and Billy went on the audition.
The jury didn’t say much, not that Billy did good, neither that he did bad. After he had danced they had a chocked expression on their feces. Billy didn’t think he did well and he thought that he would never get in to that ballet school. When one of the other boys tried to talk to him, he punched him in the face and the only made it worse.
Billy went home and waited for the letter that would tell him if he got in or not. Some days later the letter came and he opened it to se the final decision. When he read it you couldn’t really se if he was sad that he didn’t get in or if he got in and just cried because he was exited or worried. But when his family wondered he told them that he got in. His family was of course happy for him, but still a little sad that Billy was going to leave them. At the same time Billy left, the mine strike ended and Billys father and brother went back to the mines. Billy left his home, his family and his friend to start a new life at the ballet school.
Then the movie skips forward some years and you see Billys father and brother on their way to a concert. It was a ballet concert, and a grown up Billy was a dancer in it.
So Billy got to fulfill his dream to be a dancer in the end.
